The other day I was visiting with my friend who had a cold and she made a comment that her cold “wouldn’t go away”. I asked her how long she’d had it and she told me it was almost a month. Shocked, I asked her if she considered the possibility that she might have sinusitis. She dismissed it quickly at first and said she has never had sinus or allergy problems before, but after doing some digging on the internet, it turned out that her “cold”, wasn’t a cold at all….She had sinusitis.
Because the symptoms of a cold and sinusitis are so similar, it is difficult to distinguish one from the other. Although I have written on this subject before, I do think that it is a good time to re-visit this subject, because often times, sinusitis is confused with your typical flu and cold symptoms, and knowing exactly what you have, means making the right diagnosis, and treatment plan.
So How Do I Know My Sinusitis Isn’t a Cold?
A typical cold lasts approximately two weeks, so if your symptoms persist longer than that, you may have a sinus infection or sinusitis. Having suffered from sinus conditions throughout my lifetime, it’s easy for me to distinguish one from the other, but if you are not typically prone to a sinus infection, how would you know the difference?
Both colds and sinus infection cause fatigue, stuffy runny nose, sneezing and sinus congestion, so it’s understandable that so many people misdiagnose their condition. To help you determine the difference, let’s look at what these two ailments DON’T have in common. The following are sinusitis related symptoms:
· Acute Sinusitis sufferers usually experience a green or gray nasal discharge, whereas a cold the discharge is usually darker and thicker
· Clear thin discharge from the nose for chronic sinusitis sufferers
· Foul tasting post nasal drip and bad breath
· Occasional pain in the roof of your mouth or teeth
Understanding your symptoms is crucial when it comes to deciding on the remedy that’s right for you and once you rule out a cold, the next step is choosing the right sinusitis treatment .
Now I know what I have…What do I take?
I am a strong believer in all natural remedies, so no matter what I have; I always look for the natural cure first. I am not dead set against traditional medicines, in fact for years they were all I used, but now I know better and I have no doubt that there are natural remedies out there that are just as effective, if not more so, and by far, much safer, so why not consider these first?
Having sinusitis or any kind of allergy symptoms is debilitating to say the least. They make you feel tired, sluggish and dopey so taking a medication that only masks the symptoms but still makes me feel doped and tired, in my opinion, is NOT effective.
For my sinusitis treatment, I use an all natural capsaicin based nasal spray called Sinol, because not only does it clear up my sinusitis fast, I can safely use it throughout the day as needed. It is 100% all natural so there are no harsh chemicals or side effects, but the best part for me is that by using this product, it has reduced the amount of outbreaks I now get, and I never feel sluggish, dopey or tired like I did with antihistamines and decongestants.
There are other capsaicin based products on the market and I’ve tried them all, but I like the softer delivery of Sinol’s formula the best. I get terrible sinus headaches with my sinusitis and Sinol stops the headache pain in minutes. I used to use Tylenol and Advil for them, but it took forever for the pain to stop. I also use a neti pot on occasion, but for my on the go lifestyle, I keep a bottle of Sinol handy and now I never let my symptoms get in my way.

I have to admit, the first time I saw a commercial for restless leg syndrome, my first thought, was “what are they going to come up with next to push a medication”? I remember making fun of the commercial later that day with my friends, and I was shut up very quickly, when one of them perked up with a funny look on her face and said “I have that”.
Embarrassed, I tried to back pedal and offer my sympathies, but truthfully, she was a bit of a hypochondriac, so I still didn’t put that much stock in it. Well, it turns out, that Restless Leg Syndrome is quite real, so much so in fact, that it may affect as many as 12 million Americans.
So What Does RLS Have To Do With My Allergies?
Johns Hopkins Researchers found that some sleep inducing allergy medicines significantly worsen Restless Leg Syndrome and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has discovered a possible cause. The reason they believe is “Histamine Receptors”. Some cells contain protein which is found on its surface and are triggered by histamine. When these cells are activated these histamine receptors will stimulate sleeplessness.
JHU conducted a test on 12 patients suffering from Restless Leg Syndrome by giving them either a true sedative, or diphenhydramine an ingredient in many allergy medications used to cause drowsiness. The study showed that the sedatives had little to no effect on the patients with RLS, but the diphenhydramine made the RLS as much as three to four times worse. Five out of Six Patients in the study showed elevated numbers of these histamine receptor proteins, an incredible percentage I think.
My All Natural Allergy Nasal Spray Wouldn’t Get In the Way
I found this study so interesting and it makes me wonder what other ailments are affected by un-natural ingredients in allergy and other medications. What else interferes or worsens symptoms when you’re sick and un-well? I am a firm believer in all natural medicine. I don’t oppose traditional medicines but I like to look for the alternatives first.
Fortunately, I don’t suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome and my apologies go out to my friend Lisa and anyone else who does. It is real and it’s quite uncomfortable from what I’ve read. I do however, suffer from allergies and sinusitis, and I use Sinol all natural nasal spray made with 100% all natural ingredients.
Sinol has no side effects and it’s incredibly fast and effective and never interferes with any of my other medications. I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from Restless Leg Syndrome or to anyone who needs allergy medication and takes multiple medications and worries about drug interactions.
No matter what you suffer from, I always recommend that you do research for a natural choice when you can and always consult with your health care provider when trying new medications.

There has been so much buzz about the use of capsaicin lately that I felt an article dedicated strictly to its benefits was important. It happens to be one of my favorite homeopathic ingredients, (garlic is my favorite for just about everything else), and so I’d like to dedicate this week’s article to this little gem of a super food. If you don’t know much about capsaicin, I will fill you in on a few facts just to bring you up to date with this mighty powerful compound.
Capsaicin is purified extract, unique in chili peppers. (Read what William Storms MD has to say about it in January’s issue of First for Women). When eaten, it’s the capsaicin that gives the Chile pepper its blistering hot sensation that waters your nose and eyes, and leaves you gasping and wheezing.
Some people can’t get enough of these peppers whose history dates back before Christopher Columbus. They’re called chile heads or pepper heads, and they’d probably reach for a habanera pepper, scoring 10 on the Scoville heat scale (I’ll explain this shortly), before they’d think of grabbing a chewy chocolate or decadent dessert.
So what’s the craze all about?
We all know that chile peppers are used in foods to add heat and spice. Hot peppers are rated on the Scoville scale which measures the piquancy or heat of a pepper. The scales’ rating starts at 0.0 for a bell pepper and go all the way to 16,000,000, the rating for pure capsaicin. That packs quite a punch if you’re eating it, but how is that going to help you if you have a migraine headache, or suffer from year round allergies and sinus?
For years now, capsaicin has been recognized by the medical community for its unique healing properties. The heat from capsaicin is being used topically as well as through intranasal means for problems such as:
· Muscle and back pain
· Pain stemming from arthritis and shingles.
· Relief for headaches of all types
· Sinus, Allergy and Sinusitis relief
Currently there are studies being conducted by the American Association for Cancer Research suggesting capsaicin has the capacity to kill prostate cancer cells. It seems there’s nothing this little compound can’t do.
I don’t have to stick a pepper up my nose do I?
As a sinus, allergy and headache sufferer, my prayers were answered because capsaicin comes in a nasal spray formula that clears my symptoms quickly and all naturally. Thankfully, I’m not spraying 16,000,000 Scoville units of heat up my nose for this relief, because I clearly wouldn’t have one left.
I get the perfect amount of capsaicin combined with all the right amounts of other unique all natural ingredients like aloe vera and rosemary extract, sea salts and eucalyptus, formulated to clear my headache, sinus and allergy pain instantly so I can get on with my life, free of decongestants and antihistamines. Sinol allergy nasal spray for headache is the first FDA registered nasal spray on the market, and I don’t leave my house without it. So when I see articles like the one in First for Women , that promote capsaicin and how beneficial it is, I get excited because I think it’s about time this tiny little compound gets the recognition it deserves.

Just before Christmas I began to get a tickle in my throat and tightness in my chest. Knowing my body the way I do, I knew this couldn’t be good. I rarely get sick, but when I do, it usually comes at me like a locomotive, and then hangs around like a bad habit. I felt a cough coming on and since every cough I’ve ever had turned bronchial, I decided to prepare myself for the worst.
First, I armed myself with vitamins. I’m a big fan of vitamins when I get sick, especially vitamin C, and tea, lots and lots of hot tea. Then I decided to see if there were ways to treat or prevent bronchitis naturally, just in case it developed or tried to, so I began looking for alternative solutions on the internet and I have to admit, what I found really surprised me.
I can make my own medicine?
I began looking at websites and found recipes on how to treat bronchitis naturally. I found recipes with ingredients stemming from almonds to turmeric, but there seemed to be a recurring theme surrounding a few herbs used in some of these recipes. It seems that cayenne pepper, rosemary and eucalyptus are favored herbs in treating bronchitis. Then I stumbled on an article written by expert ezine author Balaji B that states the following about two of these very ingredients:
“Aromatherapy is one of the widely used bronchitis natural remedy which involve inhaling the eucalyptus oil that provides some relief from the inflamed lungs. Cayenne pepper is one of the other best bronchitis natural remedies which helps break up the congestion and help you get quicker relief.”
I found this extremely interesting because, not only were these familiar ingredients to me, but I had them in a convenient nasal spray form.
Lets Experiment!
I am a chronic sinus and allergy sufferer, and since I treat my symptoms all naturally, I use an allergy nasal spray that contains only all natural ingredients, and as it turns out, eucalyptus, rosemary and cayenne pepper are just a few of the ingredients in it. That being the case, I thought I’d combine a concoction of vitamin therapy with hot tea, and spray my way to wellness with my trusted bottle of Sinol nasal spray, then document my results for a possible future treatment for when I get a case of bronchitis. I began my experiment on the 15th of December and today I am pleased to say that for me it was a success.
• Week One: I started out each morning congested and full of phlegm so the first thing I did was blow my nose, and clear out my head. Then I used my nasal spray, had my tea, and took 1 multi vitamin and 1000mg of Vitamin C. I used Sinol throughout the day, and I have to say that my days were fine. My cough was quiet and I did not feel sick, sleepy, drowsy, or irritable and I felt completely alert. At night, I found the congestion creeping back, so again, I would blow my nose, squirt my Sinol drink my hot tea and this helped me sleep very comfortably.
• Week two: Christmas preparations had me running like crazy so I was lax in my experiment in the first part of week two. I wasn’t taking my vitamins or using my Sinol nasal spray and I believe because of this, my cough became more persistent, and seemed to affect me the most during the evenings. I immediately started my experiment again, and I have to say, the cough only lasted for about three days and never developed into bronchitis.
I think the biggest success in this experiment for me, was the fact that nothing serious developed so I didn’t have to go through the expense and discomfort of going to a doctor or taking antibiotics or OTC remedies that make you feel drowsy and lousy. I feel that it truly pays to do some research and to try alternative solutions whenever you can.

For years, every morning like clockwork, I am greeted with the same ritual day after day; heavy breathing in my face, tail wagging and a wet nose nudging me to get out of bed. I can think of no better way to wake up than have Emma, my black Labrador retriever greet me in the morning, and if you’re a dog lover like me, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
Shortly after I got Emma, I adopted a cat which nobody seems to like very much, but I do, and as long as I feed her and tend to her every need, then we get along just fine. If you’re a cat lover, you also know exactly what I’m talking about.
I have pets, and I am an allergy sufferer, but I love animals too much to sacrifice having them. I decided a long time ago, that I would deal with my allergies however I must, in order to have the love of animals in my home.
Maybe I should get a turtle!
Okay, I admit that for a spell, I seriously did re-think the love of an animal in my home. I did question if the suffering was worth it, but in truth, I fell in love with my pets and for me there was no turning back so I tried every product on the market to help with my symptoms. For all intents and purposes, they worked but I hated the way I felt when I took them. I dealt with it, because I didn’t have a choice so I just got used to walking around dry nosed and jittery or sometimes dopey and sluggish depending on what I was taking. I did, however, manage to find my comfort zone as a pet owner with allergies by taking the following steps to ease the situation:
• Wash my hands often and always after petting
• I became a bit of a clean freak so I vacuum frequently
• I invested in a really good air purifier to clean the air
• I Have my dog groomed and brushed often
I can have my dog and pet her too?
Despite having found a comfort zone, I never stop looking for ways to make my pet loving allergy life, better. Every article I came across offered nothing new and usually alluded to getting rid of the pet, in order to get rid of the allergies, until a few years ago. That’s when my prayers were answered.
I saw a press release on Sinol all natural nasal spray for sinus, allergies and headache, and I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical when I read it. I had already tried everything out there and I had little faith that anything all natural could work better than a decongestant or antihistamine. Doesn’t an allergy product HAVE to have these in it to be effective? I certainly thought so, but fortunately, that is NOT THE CASE.
I decided to try it and from the start, my allergy symptoms disappeared, and I was shocked that I wasn’t feeling dopey or sluggish. I am able to use it throughout the day as I need it, and I have no side effects from it at all. My nose doesn’t dry out and I’m not jittery like I feel with decongestants and antihistamines. It’s hard to explain if you don’t have pet allergies, but for me, it completely changed the way I interact with my pets. I still wash my hands and vacuum often, but I pet them and hold them more, and I approach them so differently now that I have a medicine that lets me do it. Perhaps it’s time to get Emma a playmate???

My friend just sent me a clip from an article she found in the January 2009 issue of the Readers Digest that I found incredibly interesting. The article is centered on the often misdiagnosed sinus infection, but it wasn’t so much the symptoms that I found interesting, but the acknowledgement that was given once again to one of my favorite ingredients used in my Sinol all natural sinus remedy: Capsaicin.
Alexander C. Chester, MD, a clinical professor of medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center, notes that there are several types of pain, stemming from areas other than just the head area that often lead a person to misdiagnose a sinus infection. As a chronic sinusitis and allergy sufferer I am well aware of the aches and pains that center on the condition, but for people new to sinusitis, I could easily see how they could be misled. Some common symptoms according to Dr. Chester that could mislead you to think otherwise are:
· Feeling sore and worn out
· Pain in the shoulder, neck and hips
· Tooth pain and sensitivity
Dr. Chester even feels that there could be some cases of arthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome that are misdiagnosed and are actually sinus infections.
Kudos to capsaicin
There are several products on the market, both prescribed and over the counter for treating sinusitis, but if you want to treat you symptoms all naturally then your choices are limited. Dr. Chester notes that drinking lots of water and staying hydrated is helpful in keeping your nasal passages less stuffed, reducing the chance of infection. He goes on to say that “capsaicin pepper spray is an alternative remedy showing some promise”.
I am always delighted to see this powerful ingredient get recognition, especially when it comes from a doctor of traditional medicine and not a holistic doctor. I personally think the statement down plays the true impact of capsaicin and its effectiveness, but again, its acknowledgement from the traditional medical community and I was very happy to see it.
Catch the capsaicin buzz
My all natural nasal spray with capsaicin is Sinol and I have been using it for about two years now. I don’t know how I managed before without it, and because of it, I am the closest I have ever been, to being sinus and allergy free. The more I’ve used it, the less frequent my episodes have been, and I never feel tired or dopey or have a single side effect like I did when I used antihistamines and decongestants. Even if I do get a flare up, I use my all natural nasal spray as often as I need it and I still feel vibrant and alert and I’m not slowed down in the least. Now you can see why I get so excited when I see capsaicin get the recognition it deserves.

Does Nasal Spray Addiction Truly Exist?
As many of my readers know, I have been a hard core allergy and sinus sufferer, since I’m a little girl, and over the years, I’ve figured out how to control them instead of them controlling me. It is this life long battle and my constant use of nasal spray products that lead me on my search for an all natural solution. There has been a lot of debate around the subject of nasal spray addiction, (NSA) arguing as to its merit as a real addiction or not, but I say… it’s an individual thing, and don’t you dare tell an addict It’s NOT REAL!
Don’t take my bottle!
I began using nasal sprays at a very early age, and one thing I remember very clearly, is that my nasal spray bottle, was my security blanket, and god forbid, I forgot it then I became very anxious and nervous.
I entered adulthood clinging to my nasal spray bottle like Linus clinging to his blanket. The subject of NSA caught my attention one day, and it was perfectly clear to me that I was an addict. But there was so much controversy…was it possible to be addicted or NOT? And what exactly was I addicted to? So many professionals debate this subject, so how do you know if you’re addicted? Ask yourself a few questions:
· Do you have a nasal spray bottle everywhere ie: car, office, etc.
· Do you wake up in the middle of the night several times for a dose?
· Have you been using it longer than the manufacturer recommends?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, than you could have an addiction. Some say the addiction is to certain ingredients like phenylephrine found in Neo-synephrine, or oxymetazoline found in Afrin, and others may say that you simply get used to breathing so well, that you just don’t want to stop.
For me, I believe it was both. Once you start breathing clearly, you certainly don’t want to stop, but admittedly, I exceeded the recommended dosage, and that’s where I believe I became dependant on the ingredients.
An alternative solution exists!!
Over time, I managed to quit using these products, but I never quit my addiction to breathing freely! It has been my mission to find an alternative solution that will allow me to live my life as closely to an allergy free person, as possible. I didn’t want antihistamines or decongestants so I looked for an all natural product that would allow me to:
· Breath freely and clearly
· Use it daily as needed with no side effects
· Use it safely without fear of addiction
Neti pots and saline rinses are good for cleaning and clearing nasal passages, but for me that’s a chore and besides, I still like a nasal spray. Two years ago I found Sinol Allergy Nasal Spray and finally after all these years, I am the closest I have ever been to being allergy free. I guess you can call me an addict, because I am addicted to breathing freely and until they find a cure, I’ll always have my all natural nasal spray on hand.

Every fall, I convince myself that my allergies will be laid to rest until the spring season returns. I actually believe that I’ll get to enjoy my Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and that the stuffing will be inside the turkey and not inside my head, but every year is the same. I still get SLAMMED!
Seasonal allergies are sneaky because they can very easily be confused with a cold, and if you are not a chronic allergy sufferer or you develop them later in life, you might not realize what you’re in for.
How do I know if it’s a cold or seasonal allergies?
I’ve suffered with allergies my whole life, so I’m well versed when it comes to differentiating colds from allergies. A lot of confusion centers on this subject, so how do you know if your symptoms are here for a season or a week?
When it’s a cold:
Symptoms typically appear individually ie: sneezing, then a runny nose which eventually follows into your chest, etc. When its seasonal allergies:
Minimize your exposure to allergens:
As fall and winter approach, you spend more time indoors. Forced air heating systems can kick up dust spores in the carpet, on shelves, ceiling fans etc, causing your allergy symptoms to flare up. Here are a few things that I do to make my life easier during the fall and winter:
You don’t have to sleepwalk through the holidays!
Prescription drugs and medicines containing antihistamines and decongestants can make you feel drowsy and lousy. The laundry list of side effects can be longer than Santa Claus’s naughty or nice list, and having tried just about every medicine out there, I STRONGLY suggest using medicines with all natural ingredients.
All natural products can give you the relief you need without nasty side effects. And since you’re treating your symptoms without decongestants or antihistamines, you feel alert and awake, not sluggish and tired. Sinol allergy nasal spray along with a hot cup of tea with honey is my favorite defense during my allergy seasons; the Sinol, because it works wonders on my sinuses, and the tea, well….just because I love it and it always makes me feel good.
Don’t let your holidays be ruined by sneezing and wheezing your way through them. Find the all natural solution that works for you and have an enjoyable holiday season.

How many times have we been warned not to mix drugs and alcohol, because the result can be devastating? So imagine how potentially dangerous it can be mixing two conflicting prescription drugs! As someone who has taken prescription drugs my entire life, I’m amazed that the risks of mixing prescription drugs, doesn’t sound off more alarms.
Many of my friends suffer endlessly with allergies and headaches but fear taking medicine for their problems because of all the prescription drugs they are on. There are just too many gray areas when it comes to mixing prescription meds and we just don’t know all the consequences related to them.
Everyone should know the risks of using multiple drugs and today more than ever, it is important to know what you are taking and how it can affect your body. Too often, taking more than one medication can conflict with one another causing a drug interaction. Drug Interactions occur when two or more drugs react with each other.
Here are a few things you should know about DI’s:
It is so important that we understand the implications of drug interactions but, yet having to sacrifice relief for your allergies or headache because you are on prescription drugs is agonizing to say the least. This is especially a problem if you are:
All Natural Solutions Are Available:
Seeing so many of my friends put at risk because of the numerous medications they were on, became one more reason I actively pursued alternative treatments for allergy and headache sufferers. My goal was to find all natural products that could be used safely, and CONCURRENTLY with other medications, but they had to be fast and effective.
I found that capsaicin, a main ingredient in Sinol nasal spray, is effective for dilating constricting blood vessels and aiding in pain control. Other natural ingredients like eucalyptus and rosemary are also key components in fighting bacteria and easing nasal congestion. Using medicines with all natural ingredients can be a life saver if you are currently taking one or more medications, and suffer with:
You no longer have to sacrifice your allergy and headache relief, because natural choices are available, and they are just as fast and effective as their prescription counterparts. As a lifelong allergy and sinusitis sufferer, I know a thing or two about what prescription drugs and antihistamines can do to your body. Living life while taking antihistamines is more like sleep walking, you feel drowsy all day and doing even the simplest things causes fatigue. When I finally said enough was enough, I needed to find an effective but ALL NATURAL solution; my research led me to Sinol Allergy Sprays.
I’ve been using Sinol for two years now, and have introduced it to countless patients and even my six year old son. Here’s what you should know about prescription drugs:
I’ve found through both professional and personal experiences that prescription drugs for allergies and headaches carry with them a heavy cost both financially and physically.
So Why is “Clean” Medicine like Sinol Any Different?
The name says it all, all natural products are “clean” in the sense that they are naturally produced and therefore, naturally acceptable to our bodies. That means no nasty side effects, and no dependency! Most natural products, like Sinol, can be used more frequently without losing the efficacy.
Natural products take advantage of time tested ingredients that have been used for thousands of years. Here are some examples:
Best of all, natural solutions are always cheaper than synthetic drugs, because they aren’t protected by pharmaceutical giants with patents or copyrights.
